Giving Thanks

We've had Thanksgiving on the brain, which got us thinking about our favorite traditions, dishes and memories. So we thought we'd share a few of our favorite things about Thanksgiving with friends near and far...

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because it’s all about family and great food, without the pressure of gift giving. I love to host and cook and have come a long way since my first disastrous attempt when my turkey caught on fire (do not use convection unless you’ve covered the turkey)! I love scouring holiday cooking magazines and trying new things. This year, the new dish will be a chocolate bourbon pecan pie with chocolate ganache glaze! Perhaps the best part of the day is after the meal, when we all sit around and watch football (I pretend), have more slices of pie and play card games.

One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is cooking with my family. Everyone happily plays a role, including my kids, who get really excited to take part. The ooh’s and aah’s over the dishes they helped to prepare makes them proud, which makes my heart swell with love. Once the meal is finished, the board games come out and the serious competitions begin! The day is always such a joy, filled with laughter and togetherness. I am so proud of and thankful for the family Brendon and I have made together.

I love all the beige stuff: turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing and gravy, all piled together in a heap! And corn casserole!!! It’s one of the few times a year I eat like this. But I have also led the charge for healthier versions of the side dishes. I spend the Fall reading through the latest Bon Appetit, Food and Wine or New York Times Cooking section and trying something new. Spicy roasted root veggies, curried carrots, acorn and butternut squashes and roasted brussels sprouts with broccoli, finished off with a drizzle of balsamic, will be the new sides gracing my family’s table this year. Change is delicious!
